After I bought a game, I was able to play for a little while, but now Steam is asking me to purchase the game again.

You are allowed to play the game while Steam is authorizing your credit card. If your credit card purchase is declined, Steam will remove the game from the "My Games" list. The next time you try to play the game, you will be asked if you want to purchase it.
