Motion Sick?

A few tips I've gotten to reduce motion sickness:

* do what you can to increase framerate/reduce framerate fluctuation (reduce screen res, sound and video quality settings)
* setting fps_max to something reasonable may help
* activating mat_vsync may help
* switching from FOV 75 (default) to FOV 90 may help

Other tips I've received:

* while in vehicles, run into less things
* throw up... you'll feel better for a while

Edited by MATT. Also try this:

(Read more at HalfLife2.net.)

1) Update your monitor's drivers.

2) Find out the Maximum Refresh Rate that your monitor supports for the resolution that you prefer gaming on (lowering resolution will result in higher possible refresh rates). This step is just for informational purposes. You may skip it since Step 4 completes this.

3) Download RefreshForce (Google it).

4) Tell it to "Auto Find" your refresh rates and modes. Click Apply.

5) Go to Steam --> Right click Half-Life 2 --> select Properties --> Launch Options.

Now you can specify the width, height and refresh rate of the screen on which you will be playing. Mine, for example is this: -w 1024 -h 768 -refresh 100

This means I am running a resolution of 1024x768 at a refresh rate of 100hz.

6) Click OK and close the Properties window.

7) It's best to restart your computer now, since you applied that RefreshForce fix.

-Sit back from the monitor. Just getting a little more perspective of your desk will help keep you from getting sick.

-Turn on the lights. Staring at a monitor for hours with the lights off is going to ruin your vision and give you headaches.

-Take a break every hour. Use the bathroom, grab a snack, basically just kill 15 minutes before you start playing again.

Also during your break dont go and watch TV. Give your eyes a break. Ive already read some places that people have busted a blood vessel in thier eye because they played for 10-12 hours straight.

Eyes vs Ears

Motion sickness is caused when there is a difference between what your inner ear is telling your brain and what your eyes see.

If you're in a car that's moving but you are reading or looking at something inside the car, your ears will perceive motion but your eyes do not. This causes car sickness.

Likewise if you're playing a computer game, your eyes perceive motion but your inner ears says your standing still.
I think the problem may be more pronounced in Half Life 2 since it is so immersive.

If you watch gamers who play alot you may notice them moving their head around and shifting their bodies from side to side while playing. I do this alot and my wife makes fun of me for it but I think that's why I don't get motion sick while playing.

The best solution though is to sit a little farther away from your monitor. Just push the screen further back on your desk so that less of your field of view is taken up by the screen. Just a little bit can help alot.

Great. HL (the first) was one of the handful of games that made me violently ill with motion sickness.

I can only hope that HL2 does NOT do this. If it does I will not be able to play it.

Guess I will find out tomorrow....

I'm guessing its because I also sway when playing games

Still... I get around 60fps at 1024x768 @ 120Hz

...Maybe its because I'm desensitised to it all (try playing Doom95 on "turbo" mode )

To me, its kinda laughable that someone might get sick from playing a game... Am I right in assuming this afflication only affects so-called "casual gamers", I'm surprised if it does, don't they spend all their time playing games like GTA, Driv3r, Need for Speed, and Madden?

Surely those games would induce motion sickness more easily?

No, this does not only happen with casual gamers. I have played just about every major game for the last 7 years and Half-Life 2 is the only one that has ever caused me to feel motion sickness.

It's odd that this topic came up, I actually started to feel dizzy for a while and didn't know if it was just me or an illusion... crazy!

Definately weird... I unlocked the game last night and only played for about 10 minutes before I thought I was gonna puke. Been gaming FPSs for years... Wolf3d, doom, HL1, CS, etc... all the same settings and never had any problems. We'll see if it happens again this afternoon when I'm home from work.
